MAORIS AND THEIR LAND
MR. NGATA INTERVIEWED; By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Saturday. Mr. Ngata. M.P., interviewed' at Huntly, stated that at the Tokaann Land Conference, the committee did not approve of the proposed abolition of the Native Appelate Court and a reversion to the old system of re-hearing which was very costly to litigants and multiplied delay. .The committee suggested that tie procedure in the ..Native Land Court should be amended to facilitate exchanges and that the Government should appoint commissioners to carry on a wholesale scale of exchanges between the various sections of a tribe. The commission insisted that the Government should perfect the system of settling Maoris on their own lands, and expressed the opinion that the time had not arrived when the restrictions against alienation should be altogether removed. Auckland, Last Night. The Hon. J. Carroll, Minister for Native Affairs, attended the native conference at Huntly on Saturday, anil will return to Wellington to-morrow night.
