BUTTER-FAT COMPETITIONS.
SUGGESTED FOR TARANAIU'S SHOW. At last night's meeting of the Agricultural Society a letter was received from Mr. A. Buchanan, the well-known Jersey breeder, of "Jersey Holm." l'almerston North, who is a keen supporter of the local Society. ITe enclosed a cheque for U?, 3s as'a donation towards tlie prize fund for I'M). "If I may be permitted," lie wrote, "to suggest tlie manner in which I would like it allocated, I will do so briefly: To encourage exhibitors hi the home industries section, one guinea may be devoted to prizes for little girls under twelve years of age, for neatness of work done under tlie school teachers' supervision. The other two guineas may be given towards a prize for a ''butter-fat competition" on similar lines to mat which if held in Palnierston North. There is, of course, no educational value in such a competition, unless the breeding of the cows k known, so that farmers might learn how to breed others like the winners. Entries should therefore be limited to cows by purebred sires, registered as a guarantee of purity of breeding. The Government may be asked to have a veterinary exmiuation made and unhealthy animals should not be allowed to compete. During the test the attendants should use an antiseptic wash for the hands after each individual animal is bandied. Tlie animals should be under the sole control of the Association for not less than ten days and while the tests are being taken." Concluding, he wished the Society ''the honor due for honest endeavors to educate and please learners „f all ages in the community." The hitter was referred to the committee for its consideration.
