A. party from Manumit made an ascent of Xgnunihoe during the holidays, and report that the volcano is still hi an active state, belching forth a column of black smote and occasionally showers of stones. A dull rumbling noise is also to be heard on hhe mountain. A RETIRING GAOLER. Wellington, Last Night. Mr. Armstrong, who lately retired from thu poet of gaoler at the Terrace prison, has been granted £250 compensation for injuries while discharging his duties. Mr. Armstrong was recently attacked by a prisoner in one of the prison workshops and severely wounded.

The Marine |)|iartment is making enquiries into the report published regarding the startling incident connected with the small steamer Cygnet on Easter Monday at Akaroa, when it is uaid she wa« 'acting ab lender between the shore and the Union Company's steamer Mararoa. The. report alleges that there were fully 0110 persons on the Cygnet when alio commenced to roll in an alarming manner, The. Deparlme-.it states that the Cvgnet has a permit for only 386 passengers, and if the vessel were carrving as many people as allogod there ha* been a. serious broach of the i-c'Milations. There Is always a Customs officer on the wharf to check the number of people boarding a vessel, and the Department is awaiting the official report on the matter.
