BURGLARS AX WORK. , Aahburton, Thursday Night. Last night a whore occupied by ilajnptrn Brothers at Tinwald was burglariously entered while the occupants were asleep, and monev totalling over seven founds was 9tofen. Gibb's general store at Hinds was also broken into and the till robbed ot its contents. Tobacco and other goods were also stolen. MUNICIPAL SUPERANNUATION. Invercargill, Thursday Night. In the 1908 Superannuation Act power itvas given to local bodies to form a munjcipai superannuation fund either individually or collectively. Local bodies' representatives throughout Southland held a meeting some time ago, and decided to write to the Municipal Association, which communicated with local bodies throughout New Zealand asking what support they would give the scheme. The Invercargill Corporation employees have now decided favourably, and lie Couflcil considered the matte-to-night and referred the recommendations back to the Finance Committee, in order that the form might be changed so as to give thi fullest information as to the intention _of the employees, pnd also local conditions. THE TIMBER COMMISSION. Christchurch* Thursday Night. fTUe Timber Commission has concluded its sittings here. Mr. A the Collector of Customs, gave evidence regarding the importation of timber from abroad into Lyttelton for the two years ended June 30tli, 1908. Mr. C. H Biss, District Railway Engineer, gave details of the timbers used by the railways in Canterbury and the future requirements. Mr. W. Jacques, builder, considered large size Oregon should be allowed to come in duty free/and a large export duty on kauri be imposed. 3tr. Roliert ailigon, secretary of the Central Dairy Company, stated that by importing Oregon in shoots, butter boxes jcost lis 2'/.d each, compared with Is Od in (white pine. Mr. G. E. Richardson, manager of Addington workshops, gave details of timber used. Mr. E. W. Waller, limber merchant, stated that mills could not sell timber at a less price than at of the Commission leave for IHanmer to-morrow, and on Tuesday leave for the West Coast via Otira. |
