UACING IN NEW SOUTH WALES. A Sydm-y correspondent writes:—A big Held is regarded as a triumph by the managers of racing clubs. It certainly testifies to the attractiveness of their officers and efficiency of their arrangements. But a field may be too bjg—too big, that is to say, for the course. This seems to have been the case at Hoaeliill where, in the Trial ■Stakes, out of 2!) starters 12 fell, witn very untoward results to both riders anil horses. It was the old story; one horse fell, and the others fell over him. if there had been more room there might have been no accident. At the same meeting there was a bit of a scandal over the Jiosehill flip, and it has set straight-going people thinking. The prize was a valuable one; there were originally 74 entrants, anil of these 00 remained on the card on the day of the race. Hut there was a "sweep" connected with it, and the owners were disappointed in their expectation of "getting something for nothing") as an inducement to win. Then, whether from tliis cause or any other, there were wholesale scratenmgs, and only a dozen—and these, for the most part, a very poor sample of the (ill—faced the starter. This is an example of what the -'sport of kings" may suffer from the greed of gain This episode seems to rail for corrective action, but what it shall be has not yet been decided.
