BOROUGH COUNCIL.

An adjourned meeting of the NewPlymouth Borough Council was held last evening. There were present: His Worship the Mayor, Councillors jjiowiio, Boon, Bellringer, Coleman, Collis, and Morey. Mr. W. X. Ewing waited on the council on behalf of the Ngamotu Lodge, and in connection with the Grand Lodge celebrations, to be held in the Theatre Royal in the first week ill May, lie asked for permission to enclose ivitn a screen the footpath from the Devon Street entrance of the theatre to the side entrance in Egniont Street.—Permission was granted conditionally on the Lodge first obtaining the consent of the occupiers of auy premises affected, the permission to be for two days only—from 5 p.iu. on one day till 8 a.m. the following one. THE BOROUGH (ENGINEER.

The following report of the Works Committee was read:—That Inspector Evctts receive notice terminating his engaVroent with the council, that the duties be divided, and fresh applications be called for the position of dog-tax collector and pound-weeper on commission; that the duties of building, sanitary, and general inspector be resumed by the borough engineer; that with the object of relieving the borough engineer of some of his other duties a working overseer be appointed to carry out the duties of supervising street works, etc., under the genereai direction of the borough engineer; that the borough engineer be authorised to call for applications for a working overseer at a salary of £3 per week; that the borough engineer be authorised to engage' l the services of a person capable oi assisting in his office, and also carrying out the extra duties now -imposed on him, such appointment to be subject to the approval of the Works Committee; that the borough engineer be authorised to kerb and channel the footpath on Jhe west side of Dawson Street, from the hospital gate to Fulford Street. The report was adopted.

DRAINAGE. The borough engineer was authorised to lay on the table at next meeting of the council a list of all owners of properties not yet connected with the sewers.
