A PARTY MOVE.

To the Editor. Sir,—As an English Lilieral it grieves lue to see how eolonuils are niishu. We arc just now full of this navv panic; and what is it? Why, very larg.-ly only a party move to discredit the Liberals in the opinions of the masses in preparation for the general olvetion which will conic certainly in a year or two, and which 'the Conservatives would like to hurry oil. We are not ignorant of their devices. This is just a repetition of the cordite episode when last the Conservatives were in apposition. Then they got tip a danger-of-attack scare because, they said, we had not enough cordite on hand, and tile Liberals, -.lot, at that time, l>eing over-strong. were defeated. I don't think they can perforin that trick again, though they are trying hard, with the help of their" masked allies in the Xavy League. Xational Defence Association, etc., and also 01 tlivir open supporters through a manipulated Press. It astonishes me that New Zeahnders pride themselves in their Liberalism and i)emocracy and yet they aie always led by such papers as Tille Times, Daily Mail, and Pall Mall Gazette to (support and endorse the capitalistic policy. If you, Sir. can .see far enough into colonial opinion or motives to see why this is so, I should he glad if you .voulil w plain. My explanation is that colonial Liberalism is not real: it is i-,i e-siMi-c Conservatism, ill that it has regard to self-interest first and hwt and only. If it were not so, why do they loo!; ' h so much favor on the party in l.ril un that would tax foreiga food import- to benefit the colonial producer (and the British landlord 'tool?—or the same

political party in their rage foi ravy expenditure, to the starvation and u-i----leet of social reform movements --nil :i----old-age pension*, taxation of land values. unemployment, etc.?—l am. etc.. ÜBKIIAL. •2!) th March, IflOfl. P.S.—All your readers should carefully read the report, in this morning's Daily Xews, of the sermon by the Venerable Archdeacon Walsh at the unveiling of tli« hatchments in St. Mary's Church yesterday.
