HALF HOLIDAY QUESTION
i),v Telegraph.—Press Association.
Wellington, Last Night. Yesterday a petition was lodged with the town clerk requesting that a poll be taken on the question or determining the day for the statutory weekly halfholiday in the Wellington district. The names attached total about 2IIOU, and it is a question now whether this number includes at least one-tenth of the municipal electors for the combined district. No more signatures can be added, localise the time for liling the petition has I closed. The promoters, whose purpose is to secure a Saturday halt-holiday, urge that the assessment about the signatures should be made on the basis of the names actually on the roll A t the lime when the petition was sent in. However, even if this plea is granted, it is questionable whether the required tenth has been obtained. Last year, the municipal roll for lirenter Wellington alone ran to over 28.000 names. It is believed the list for the combined district must now be somewhere near 35,000.
