A DIFFICULT WOIIK. Christchurcli, March In answer to a question regarding the expedition resulting in the attainment of the Magnetic Pole, Lieutenant Shatkleton said that this bail been a very important part of the work, and was a most difficult one for those who wi re engaged in it. The party did 8U» miles of relay work over the sea ice. Tl'ev hauled one sledge for a certain distal ee, then returned and hauled up the other sledge, and they (lid this from October j to December 15. And under the relay system every mile of ground had, of course, to be covered three times. The surface of the sea icc was very sticky with salt, and made the sledge tra\ idling extremely laborious. [Sir .lames Koss nearly attained the South Magnetic Pole (of vertical dip) in a voyage made in lS3i)-43, its position wa'j 'indicated as being probably 73'/ 2 deg south, and l-tJ'/ideg. east. The same explorer reached the North Magnetic Pole in 1831, when the position of vertical (lip was observed to lie Todeg. jmin. north a~ud 9(>deg. west.]
