The shocks were so violent that they sounded tiie town clock chimes and caused the brick buildings to sway about in an alarming manner. Tliey also caused pedestrians in tile no-license town lo wonder what unaccustomed weakness had overtaken their legs.

Oamaru, Tuesday. A sharp siiock of earthquake occurred at 9.30 o'clock this morning. Invercargill, Tuesday. An earthquake of about live seconds' duration was experienced at !).40 a.m.

Dimedin, Tuesday. A sharp shock of earthquake occurred at !>.:{,> this morning. There were two distinct waves, the direction being east to west.
