Buck (To Rangihiroa), a supporter of the voung Maori party's advanced platform! ami those who stood for a somewhat reactionary policy in regard to land settleliK'iit. notably the Ngapuhi chief, Kakit, a man of considerable inlluence in the far Xort'h, ami one wlio has identified himself of recent years, with active opposition to the development of the country under the Government's native land policy. However, the result was a complete victory for the (loverninent's supporter, Dr. Buck. With sixty-seven returns to hand, the figures were as 'follow:

Dr. Peter Buck, the new Northern Maori representative, is one of the medical officers engaged under the Public Health Department in carrying out work among the Maoris. lie, is 30 years of age, and belongs to the Te ' Atiawa tribCf which has its ancestral .home in Taranaki. He was educated at Urenui public school, and subsequently at To Ante College, secured a native medical scholarship in 18!)!), anil graduated at Otago University as ILB., Ch.B., 1904 Ho obtained _experience as house surgeon in Dttnedin Hospital in the following year, and secured liis present appointment in 1000. He is Tegarded as an extremely able man, a i good speaker, and, according to tho Hon. James Carroll (Native Minister) has the same aspirations and desires in Tegard to his race that are held by the Young Maori Party, of which the late Hone Heke was a prominent member. His duties as a native jnedical officer brought him into close contact with those -whose welfare he will now look after in Parliament. His election terminates his appointment under the Health Department.
