RAINING VOLUNTEER OFFICERS

ElltST BATCH RIR ENGLAND. By Telegraph.—Press Association. WellingioTi, Last Night. The Defence Council decided sonie time ago that, in furtherance of its plan for teaching the citizen soldier of New Zealand to depend upon himself, a number of volunteer officers should go to England and put in a period of training for two years. These officers were required to undergo the necessary training, and on their return to put in at leant three years' service with the defenceforces as stuff officers. It is understood) there were a very large number of applications, ami the Council of Defence had some difficulty in selecting those it considered would give the best value for the expenditure of the Dominion's money. The following are the officers, selected:—Captain and Adjutant J. E.. Marlon, -.iml.ltegimeiit Auckland Mounted Ititles; Captain.and Adjutant S. A. (.'rant, Ist Battalion Infantry Volunteers, Auckland; Lieut. W. L. Robinson, Duncdin Engineers; Captain J. H. W'hyte, D.5.0., Assistant Quartermaster- ' (General, Auckland District. Captain linrton holds a certificate for two courses of instruction, and has passed for captain, lie served as lieutenant in the South, African contingent, and acted as range officer at Trenthnm for two years. Lieutenant Robinson holds a certificate for three courses of instruction, and passed (distinguished) in musketry and tactics, and passed for his present rank. Captain Whyte, D.5.0., holds a. certificate for a course of instruction,, and passed for his present rank. He. served as lieutenant in South Africa;. All the officers are highly recommended! by their District Commanding Officer and! regimental commanders, and conform to. the required conditions as to age and length of service. ,
