By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. At, to-day's sitting of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, a letter was received from Mrs. L. M. N. Stevens, president of the W.C.T.U. of the United States, on: the great success of prohibition in Maine, where it has been ill force for 52 yearn. She quoted from 11 recent public utterance of the Governor of Alainc to the effect that Maine 'would look on prohibition as timely whenever a State could get it, no, matter what was said to the contrary, 'lie bcJieved if the people 01 Jlaine Were to ■vote ou the prohibition question tomorrow, they would give a tremendous majority for prohibition. Mrs. Jemison. of Tariki, presented the "anti-gambling" report, and Mrs. Israel that of "work in the baekblocks.". The latter showed that a vast amount of effort had been expended in the direction, of sending magazines and papers to light the houses of bush-felling camps, etc. 11l connection with the department of "non alcoholic treat nt of disease," a letter was read from the late. Uichavdsou, president of the British Medical Association, in which lie said, in a London temperance, hospital, he had been treating the sick for diseases of all kinds, and had never administered alcohol or any substitute.
