TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Tl« Taranaki Jockey Club lias good reason to be well satisfied with the splendid acceptances received for the autumn meeting. Entries for this year's meeting show an increase of 53 on hist year's figures, and acceptances arc much more numerous than those received last year. The Taranaki Cup Handicap, foT which a. dozen horses have paid up, is a distinct compliment to the handicapper, and of the four horses scratched, Maniapoto and Paritutu are unsound, and Lady Menschikoff has Keen reserved for shorter races.
The Wanganui Cup winner, Kilmarnock, heads the list with 8.12, after which comes Matata, la6t year's run-ner-up. Tan Son won over a mile at Wanganui, and Uhlando, 8.5, has only 311)3 more to carrv than h'e landed first past the post in the Cup of 1008. Tiptoe and Sir Artegal showed winning form at the Egmont meeting, and Vasa. and Taitoko are rodubtable horses over th'e distance. Of' the light-weights, Belario, 7.2, ran prominently on the second day at Wanganui, and the others have all showed good form at various times. Taken from top to bottom, the Cup has drawn well and the issue appears to he very open. Five horses have dropped out of the Flvmg Handicap, and the defection of Maniapoto leaves Moriarty in the place of honor. Recent winners on the list include Ladv Menschikoff, Waikaraka, Whctumarama and Genuine. There is evi>rv propei* of a. good race, and the loentir-frreiincj pair, Cyrene and Golden Eagle*, should help to make the finish airthc more interesting. There are eight defections from the Steward*' Handicap, which leaves ten acceptors, Mon Ami 8.7, heading the handicap. , , „ The top-weights have '-cried-off the First Welter Handicap, leaving Waikaraka. fl.O. on top. Included m the field is the imported Persimmon colt Perolina, whose first appearance on _ a Taranaki course should cause some interest. We have some well-bred 'uns r.i New Zealand, but the progeny of the Kings famous horse, Persimmon, is n rata avis in these parts. The other events have filled well, the onlv notable absentees ■being tin" lliiwke's Bav contingent, whose absence is much to be regretted. Bowever, numerous good horses are engaged and next week's gathering, provided fine weather is experienced, promises to be quite the most suecesKiul meeting held on the local course.
