A lire early this morning gutted two cottages in Lome Street, owned by Mrs. I C'rnwl'ord and occupied by I'hilfp Clilih , and George liroderick. firodcrick's family had to leave their cottage by an upstairs window. i ASHBURTON nOTEL DESTROYED Ashburtoii, March 1.1. Logan's Hotel, a tiro-storey building of 25 rooms, at Tinwald, was burned last night. No one bad been living on the premises for several weeks, and the furniture was recently removed, hut a tenant was to take possession to-day. The place, was insured, but the amount is not known. About 1 a.m. to-day a stack of sawn ; timber in the yard of tile Westland Tim--1 her Company, in an angle formed by I the sawmill'and the engine-rooms, was found to be on lire. The lire luul a good hold when the brigade arrived, and it took a full hour to master it. Efforts were mainly directed to confine the fire II to the stack and save the building, and '• in this the brigade was successful.
