I'IPIRIKT HOTEL DESTROYED. By Telegraph.—l'ress Association. Wiinguimi, Thursday. Tin- l'iiiiriki House, a well-known lourkt hostelry, owned by Jlessrs A. liiitrieli and Co., at rijiiriki, wns burned to the ground last night, Only scanty jiartieuliirs are available. So far the lire i* believed to have started in the kitchen. it laid a, good hold before it was discovered, and the building, beiug of wood, was soon a mass of llames. Fortunately, it was an oll'-tourUt Slight, and very few people were in the house. There will be no inconvenience lo tourists, as arrangements have been made for passengers lor Taumarunui staving at .the houseboat. The l'ipiriki House contained about 100 rooms, and waa a comparatively new building. It will at once lie r e-l)uilt. The insurances were £4700 on the building and JCI3OU on the contents. An insurance of £7OO is iu the Law Union ollice, the balance being in the Koyal Exchange. Tlie house was ve-insurcd with the South British, Victoria, Sun, \ r w Zealand, United and Ocean oflices. Tile loss is estimated at £OOOO above .the insurances.

A lire in the Square last night badly gutited the Federal restaurant pr-:-mi*e~. Smoke ami water caused great damage to the stock of J. C. Swallow, bookseller. The adjoining building was owned by W. Welsh. The insurances are: On building ,11500, on. Swallow's stock C;K)0. and on the. furniture Si 100, all in Phoenix ollice. On the furniture in the restaurant, belonging to Mrs. Elsmore, there was an insurance of £ir>o, and oil the furniture belonging to Mrs. Gillies an insurance of £OS, both in the Northern ollice.
