UNEMPLOYMENT.
AN ACUTE POSITION. , | By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Thursday. A return han been supplied by the Secretary of Labor to tlie Hon. Mr. Hogg, showing the applications for employment made during the week ending February 17.
The position, he says, seems to be most acute a.t Auckland and Wellington, where 1.7'2 and 272 applicants applied respectively. At Christchureh and l Dusiedin the numbers (73 and 87) arc comparatively small. In the smaller centres there is not a very largo number of applications, but (Ireymouth with 52 and Wanganui with 38 may be specially mentioned. During the lasit month no less than 827 applications were received lor employment at the Wellington office. Air. Tregcar is afraid that thin large total may be exceeded this month. Of a .total '774 applying for work during the week ended February 17, 400 hail been live years in New Zealand, 374 over live years, and 50 were assisted immigrants.
PUSHING ON PUBLIC WORKS. Wellington, Last Night. The Trades and Labor Council passed to-aiigh't a resolution urging the Government to push on with the public works authorised, so as to relieve the unemployed difficulty.
