TARANAKI TEACHERS' INSTITUTE.

A meeting of the above, which took place on Saturday afternoon at the Stratford school, was well attended, especially by teachers from the New 'Plymouth end of the district. Mr. J, W. Mail occupied the chair. A discussion took place concerning the holidays allotted throughout the Taranaki education district, the general trend of which was the expression of a wish that Taranaki could be brought •into Hue with other education districts concerning this question. On the motion of Mr. W. J. Evans (Inglewood), seconded by Miss UMey (Stanley Koad) it was resolved to request the Hoard of Education to readjust the time allowed for holidays iu Taranaki, and that ! the following holidays be grunted: Six weeks nt Christmas and one week each for Easter, mid-winter, and September (these being already in force in Wanganui and other districts). Mrs. Dowling and Mess s. Evans and Mellrov, the delegates to the last annual conference of teachers, gave an account of tiie doings at the conference., and referred to the geni*l hospitality with which tire delegates had been treated by the Duncdin -people. A hearty vote of thanks was unanimously accorded to the Dunedin institute for the hospitable treatment of the Taranaki delegates. The subscriptions to the institute were fixed as follows for 1!M)0:--Pupil teachers, 2s; teachers in receipt of under i €IOO per annum, ss; teach<er<s receiving, between £IOO and A'2oo per annum, 7s; ' and receiving above .C2UO per annum. 10s. Membership of the institute carries a free copy of the Xew Zealand Journal of Education, tin- subscription to which is 5s net per annum. - Under existing regulations the positions of first and second teachers at a large school are open to men only, ami a very animated discussion took place concerning the question of appoint- , ing women as second assistants iu large schools. It was subsequently resolved, oil the motion of Mrs Dowling. seconded by Miss Lilley, that the Board of Education be respectfully requested to consider the advisability of altering its regulations dealing with the appointment of second assistants in large schools, in the direction of making such positions open to women teachers as well as men. It was arranged that a cadet battalion parade should take place at Tnglcwood on the afternoon of Friday. 12th instant; and, after a committee consistb« of Messrs. Mail. Evans, and Mellroy nad been set up to consider the question of historical readers, the meeting adjourned.—Post.
