DISTRICT NEWS.

WAITARA ROAD. (From Our Own Correspondent). The thirty-second annual school and settlers' picnic of the Huirangi district was held in Mr. Louis Andrews' paddock last Tuetiday, and proved a pleasant and enjoyable gathering, the attendance of children and adults being well up to the average of former years. The committee in charge of the children had a large number of toys to dispose of in races, etc., which were got off early in the afternoon, every child getting a prize. At about 4 o'clock the youngsters made for the hall, where a splendid tea was laid for tliem, and all seemed to enjoy the many good things provided. Tea being over, Mr. John Andrews, in a fe,v appropriate words, distributed the prizes, each child receiving a book. The sports' prizes were won as under:—One mile, Ella Herrick 1, Harold Derrick 2, Stanley Loveridgp 3; two-mile, Vita Xicoll i, l'hyllis Nieoll i, Ronald Sartcn 3; three-mile—Hubert Old 1, Allen Old 2, Joyce Bennett 3; young girls' race, Nellie Bennett 1, Ida Spargs 2, Oka Tatara 3: married women's race, Mrs. L. Andrews 1, Mrs. 0. Horrick 2, Mrs. L. Sartcn 3; young ladies' race, Rubv Old 1, Sarah Turnbull 2, Lily Bennett 3; married women's race for quarter lamb (donated by Mr. White), Mrs. Herrick 1: married men's race for quarter lamb (donated by Mr. White), .Mr. Bert Wells 1; single men's race, li. ,1. Mcßeth 1, Norman Sampson 2, Andrew Turnlmll 3: married men's race, F. Sampson 1, .1. Pattau 2. H- Andrews 3; tug-of-war, (married v. single ladies, married won; tug of war, married v. single men, married won. At 5.30 the adults sat down to tea to the number of 00, after which an adjournment was again made to the sports ground, where races for adults were got off. The hall was later occupied. and dancing was indulged in till about midnight. The catering was h the hands of Mr. Thompson, of New Plymouth. Mr. Beckbessinger, of Waitara, donated lollies for the children.
