During the preparations to admit the water to tire almost finished Vittoria doek at Birkenhead, a higlli wind and high tide broke the piles and the timber forming the (lam. The inrush of water caught nineteen men working in the dock and swept them away, together with a platform'and hugli crane, which collapsed upon tlie workmen, pinning them. Five workmen had miraculous escapes.
