A IIOV DROWNED. Xapior, hast Xight. A boy of eight years, named -Maurice Edward Hughes, was drowned in the surf near the southern end of the Marine Parade 011 Saturday afternoon. There wa<> a heavy sea, and the boy was i-augiu by the backwash. At the inquest, ill'. S. E. McCarthy, S.M., recorded a verdict of accidentally drowned, adding the following riders:—"That the Coroner desires to call the attention of the proper authorities to the ol the buoys at present provided for life-saving purposes; in lieu 01 buoys there should be provided life-sav-ing belts, with at least -00 yards of

stumble rope attached thereto. As a further rider, the Coroner desires to direct public attention to the fact that a view of the body disclosed the fact that a "Mil, his wife and three children, lived in a one-roomed outhouse not moro i than 10ft long by Oft wide, which was without ventilation of any kind. The body of deceased was laid on a table I alongside the sleeping children."

BURNING FATALITY. Napier, liast Night. A negro named Martin Pellor, employed as cook on Hon. J. D. Orinond's Karamu station, was so badly burned through the place in which he slept catching fire on Saturday night, thflt lie died while being token to Hastings. The building was not much damaged. It is supposed that Pellor accidentally set lire to the place on retiring.

1 GRUESOME FIND. Ashburlon, Last Night. The body of a mail, decomposed beyond recognition,'' partially immersed In S pool of dead water under willow trees on the south bank of the Ashliurton river, a mile irom town, this morning. 'The remains were tho«# of a man about average height, and at far as the police can ascertain by examination, bad no whiskers, but the small portion of Jiair that was on the head was grey. Tire, man had evidently been dead for two months, and it ia thought tlint the remains had been washed down the river to where they were, found by the heavy llood which occurred at the end of January. RAILWAY ACCIDENT. Marton, Last Night. A middle-aged man named McGonagle met with a serious accident at Marton .(unction railway last evening. It appears he was removing luggage from the van, and the engine jarred the train, causing him to fall. A wheel went over his arm, practically severing it. He also received injuries on the head, and hia foot was badly bruised. He was taken to the Palmerston Hospital.

A ' NOT WANTED" INFANT. Christchu'rch, .Saturday Night. The body of a newly-bom infant was found in the river near the Barbadoes Street cemetery this aiternoon. _ It appears Hint, some boys were playing on the riverbank and had with them. The dog was going, inTothc water after sticks, and when he returned on oae occasion he brought the body with him. The. body appears as though it had been in t'lie water for some time.
