THE FLAX INDUSTRY.
Fl'llTllEH DUOL' IN HEMP PKICiiS. Word was received in I'alnicrston yesterday morning {says the Dominion's Palmerston correspondent) that a further fall in the price of hemp of 15s per ton has taken place, which brings the price of "good fair'' down to about i'gO per ton. This will, of course, make the position still worse. At the begin- 1 ning of the season the prices were about IDs per ton, and, since then, there has been a gradual drop to Ihe present low figures, which (say a mill is turning out six tons of fibre per week) means a dill'eroiico to tlie miller of about C2l per week. Questioned as lo how they f.'onsiderod this would all'ect the
men. the opinion ho.s been expressed by millers that the nun will not take lower wages so long as the mills are running. "The award lixes a certain rate,' said one, "and the men are not going to take less while we continue running our mil's."
