SHOOTING.

TARANAKI RIFLE ASSOCIATION. CADETS SHOOTING MATCHES. On Saturday the cadets' matches in the Taranaki Kille Association's annual meeting Were iired 011 the Kewa Keiva range. Major Saudford was in charge of the cadets, and, a» one of New Zealand's old-time leading siiots, was quite in his element, giving the lads a few "tips" that should prove valuable to them. The secretary to the Association, Staff-Sergcant-Major Sanderson, who is a keen official, evinced more than an ordinary interest in the boys. The weather conditions were good, and sonic excellent scores were made. Central School again won the teams match, with a big lead from the West End representatives. The No. 1 match, seven shots at 200 yards, fell to Beecham, of the W»iiarn cadets. McGabey (Central) being second and Lcpine (West End) third. The grand aggregate provided an exciting finish, the winner turning up in Geoff. Whitcoinbe, of the Central School. His performance was a fine one. He went down to his work knowing that he had a score of 4!) to beat. With one pull of the trigger to go he had to make four, a bull's eye, to win. And he was equal to the occasion. Wyllie, a Waitara pupil of the Stratford District High School, was second, andßeecham, of the Waitara cadets, third, each of them scoring 41). The prize-money was well distributed. SOUTH ISLAND ASSOCIATION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Saturday. The fifth annual meeting of the South Island Kille Association opened at Redcliff on Friday, about 80 marksmen being present. The local representation was certainly not so strong as tile programme warranted, but visitors mustered m full force. There are a large number of competitors in attendance. Most of the visitors are on their way to the big Treutham gathering, and as the original idea of the founders of the South Island Association was that it should act as a practise meeting in view of Trentham, the gathering may be said to have fulfilled its functions.
