CHINESE MINER INJURED. l)v Telegraph.—Press Association. Hokitika, Last Night. A Chines* miner named Young lie?, whilst working in his claim at Bluespur, sustained a compound fracture of both legs, caused hy a fall of earth. The. condition of the man is considered hopeless.
INQUEST. ! Wellington, Wednesday. At an inquest held to-day on the body of William Henry Massey, who was killed at the Pcncarrow quarry by a fall oi earth, caused by an explosion of gunpowder, evidence was given that deceased was- a recent arrival from England- aad an electrician by trade. Contrary to instructions he was testing wire in the drive when the charge, which had previously failed, exploded, and buried him beneath about 3000 tons of earth. The inquest was subsequently adjourned till later in the dav. Wellington, Last Night, j lAt the inquest ou William Henry Mas-1 sey, who was killed on the 12tli inst. by a 'fall of earth at flic Pcncarrow quarries, a verdict was returned of death ! by a fall of rock, due to a sudden explosion while deceased was testing electric wires, no blame being .attachable to anybody.
FALL FROM A TRAMCAR. Wellington, Last Night. Mr. J. Wakelin, sawmiller. of Taihape, was severelv injured in Wellington tonight through alighting backward from a tramear. His skull was smashed, and he is now in the hospital in a serious condition. Mr. Wakelin was on his way to ClirisMmrch, where his wife is paying a visit.
