The Japanese Consul ridiculed the story and' emphatically denies the allegations. DENIED BY CHINESE MERCHANTS. Eeceived 24, f1.30 p.m. Sydney, February U, Chinese, merchants characterise Mr. Levien's statements as wild and moonshine. They point out that if coolie* were permitted to com* to Australia indiscriminately, it would simply moan taxing heavily those already here. Newcomers would not be, able to obtain work, and merchants would have to keep them or subscribe money to send them back to China. The liierchoitts declare, they aio prepared, if Levieii can prove tluit organisation* for smuggling' Chinese into Australia exist, to render every, assistance to the Government in sup* pressing .them.
