UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION

ANNUM, MEETING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. ' Wanganui, Last Night. The annual meeting of the Press Association was held to-day. Among those present were: Messrs Kuowlos (chairman), Fcnwick, Brett, L. Blundcll, Horton, MeCullough, Mcßobie, A. A. Lucas, Bond, C. E. Kerr, Joyce, W. H. Smith, Weston, McCarthy, Bell, Frecth, Dinwiddio, Sclig, Atkiu, Carson, F. W. .lones, Coumbc, Pirani, Furncss, C. S. Smith, Cothard. List, Walker, Page, Copping and Hobcn. The annual report made allusion to the deaths of the late Mr G. G. Stead, who had been a director for five years; of the Hon. If. Fcldwick, a very old member of the Association; and of Mr. G. Humphries, who for thirty years had been on the headquarters' stall'. It was announced that a new agreement had been made with the Australian Cable Association for five years, and that a supplementary report adopted to the case of papers outside the cities was now being supplied, and had met with much approval. Mention was made of the Daylight Extension Bill, and newspaper proprietors were warned that auy such measure would be disastrous to the cable service unless a similar scheme were adopted in Australia. Allusion was made to the heavy burden imposed on evening newspapers by the charge for press telegrams, which practically remain the same as they were thirty years ago, notwithstanding the frequent concessions made to the public. The excessive cost of messages is cspceiallv felt by Übe smaller papers. The

report referred in complimentary terms to the coming Imperial Press Conference, and entioneil that Messrs Fcnwick and Brett, the two oldest members of the Association's board of directors, were Among the six representatives al- ' lotted to New Zealand. The report and - balance-sheet wore adopted. The meet--1 ing strongly adopted the complaints of ' the oppressive effects of the present i' telegraphic rates, and decided again to - urge for revision. Mr. L. Blundcll was re-elected- a director representing evea--1 ing papers, and Mr. P. Sclig elected - morning paper representative. Eotorua e was fixed as the next place of meeting. At a subsequent meeting of directors, M'r. Fcnwick was elected chairman, and ~ Mr Horton deputy chairman.
