MOA ROAD BOARD.

The Moa Hoad Board held its ordinary monthly meeting on Saturday. There were present: Jlebsrs. 11. Trimble (chairman), Cupper, Chard, Chaniney, Corkill, lloby, Lawrence, Sutherland and Young. The Treasury wrote with reference to the Board's application for a loan of £IOO to construct a tunnel over the Makara stream on the Alotukawa road. Information was wanted as to whether the proposed works were entirely new works.—The clerk had replied that the works were new works. FOREMAN'S ILLNESS. Foreman A. lloskin reported absence from duty on account of an attack of appendicitis. Although Magee had promised him to go 011 with the Egmont Road contract he had gone on to a contract at Urenui.—J. 11. Magec wired: "Will finish contracts without fail." TRAMWAY RIGHTS. On the motion of Messrs. Chard and Lawrence, permission was granted to "Mr. A. E. Surrey to construct a sawmill tramway 011 a district road. —The chairman reported that the road was being improved by tiie construction of the tramway.

THE BIG LOAN. Messrs. J. Kenwood, .T. A. Stoning. Yeates, Nisbet, and Andrews waited 011 the Board as a deputation from the settlers on the Lincoln, York, Wortley and Richmond roads, and pointed out that the metal recently put on the roads was being kicked into the water-tables. They thought the rates might well be spent in banking up the sides of the metal and blinding a certain length of it. In some parts the metal could not be expected to set without the sides being banked. The Chairman suggested that at Mr. Paulger's. one of the places mentioned, the settlers were leaving the road and using a side track, thus giving the road no chance to settle. Mr. lloby said he had travelled over the road that morning, and, owing to the condition of the metal, it was "crawl, crawl, crawl/' from beginning to end.

The Chairman was of opinion fiiat to blind the metal now would spoil the road. It was far better to keep on raking iu the displaced stones for a few months yet and then blind it. To blind it now would doubtless assist in the rapid settling of the' metal, but the metal would settle in ruts and ridges. The deputation was assured that the road would have the necessary attention forthwith.

Tim engineer, Mr. Orbril, said experience taught the advisableness of blinding newly-metalled roads with flay. Clay became hardened with the sun until the wind or rain displaced it. If the metal were left imblinded, and there was a fair amount of traffic, as on this road, the wheels and horses' "hoofs chipped off small pieces of stone, which got in amongst the stones as wedges, and made tile real metalled road. The road was .becoming firmer every day. Upon the motion of Mr. Lawrence, seconded by Mr. Hoby, it was decided to rake in loose stones and have the sides of the metal banked where required anil the worst cuttings blinded.

NEGLECTED BOUNDARIES. Messrs. George Priest and T. Gardiner, a deputation of settlers from the liatapiko and Mangatea roads, waited on the Board and asked for some particulars as to the chance of obtaining some metalling 'expenditure ' o'a these roads, explaining that their properties pa id rates to this Board and to the Stratford County Council.

The Chairman said that the matter of maintaining these roads near the boundaries was at present being considered by the Stratford County Council, on his suggestion.

In further discussion, it came out that the settlers' only outlet was through tile Moil district, whilst iho bulk of the rates went to the .Stratford County Council, which seemed to recognise no liability in the matter of providing tli'eiu with a. road. If the County Council still refused to give them fair considenition, the settlers would petition to have the

area included in the Taranaki county and the Moa road district.

After an irregular discussion the deputation undertook to interview the Stratford C'ountv Council. TENDERS.

Tenders were opened and dealt, with.— David road, earthwork: 11. and B. li. Clough, LSI las, culverts ;ts per pipe; A. Schrieber, iW and 3s (id per pipe (accepted). • No tenders being received for the work on the Mana road, the matter was left in the hands of the chairman and Mr. Young to arrange. C. V, Stead asked for attention to a dangerous culvert and for general repairs on the Kohete toad, and acknowledged the work done by the foreman last year.—Tiie work asked for had been attended to.

A special meeting was held for the purpose 01 making special orders for the raising of a loan of UoO for the erection of a bridge over the Maku stream on the Mana road, anil levving a special rate of 1-llHh penee over the special rating area.
