COLONIAL OFFICE AND THE COLONIES.
UNDERSTANDING COLONIAL CONDITIONS. E..GLKH OFFICIALS TO VISIT AUSTRALASIA. Received 7, 4.30 p.m. London, February 0. ' Earl Crewe, Secretary of State for the Colonies, has instructed Sir Charles Lucas, head of tlie Dominions' Department, to make a prolonged visit to Australia and New Zealand. Mr. A. A. Pearson, C.M.G., Principal Clerk in the Colonial Ollice, accompanies him. They sail on February 20th., The Times states that the visit is doubtless made in response to Mr. Deakin's suggestion on the last day of the Imperial Conference. Sir Charles Lucas' quiet judgment and kindly tact will, the paper says, assure for him a ready welcome. The Times recalls Lord Northcote's advice at the recent London bannuet in connection with the Colonial Office making itself better acquainted with colonial affairs and conditions.
