WAliliA. (From Our Own Correspondent). A meeting of the Wai'ea Defence liille Club was held in the Library on Saturday evenbg. A fair number was present, and .Mr. 0. 11. King was in the ehair. Jlr. Robinson's resignation as -ecretary was accepted, and Mr. l'\ Jenkins was appointed in his stead. Jlr. Uoliinson was thanked for the way in which lie had carried out his duties. It was decided to start shooting on Saturday week for a trophy -presented by Jlr. V. P. Robinson.

A meeting of the Athletic Club was held on Saturday night. Mr. MeLachlan presided. It was decided' to call tenders for the chopping-blocks. Messrs. \V. II; .lulian and (1. Corkili were appointed to pass ih<' blocks. .Messrs. W. McLachlan, W. 11, .lulian, W. B. Clarke, and T. X?. -"Julian, with the secretary, were elected a protest committee. A farewell •".social" was given to Miss N. Larking in the hall on Thursday night. In >pitc ,of the rain, the hall was crowded, there being close on two hundred present, some coming from as far as New Plymouth' and Opunake, Miss Larking, who has resided in the district for about ten years, is wellknown and respected by everyone. IJur assistance in connection with the church and other local affairs will he greatly missed. During the evening Mr. .1. J. Klwiii made a presentation, on behalf of the district, of a handsome dinner service. In doing so he hoped it would not be put on the shelf, but would be in ••onstant use. Mr. Elwin also referred in eulogistic term* to the life of Mr. 1». Hell, Miss Larking's intended husband. Mr. T. E. Larking suitably responded on /Ix'half of his sister. The liev. Mr. 1 Addenbrooke also *poke. During the ■veiling the following songs were given: '"My Queen." l!ev. Mr. Addenbrooke; "Xancy,'' Mr. Munden; "Nancy Lee," Mr. K Andrews; "Mighty Deep.'" Mr. \V. Larking; ".SUter," Mr. K. Andrews; •Way Down the Swaiiee Kivev,"' Mr. "H-hanion; a duet by Mr. ami Mrs. S. Wells, and u recitation, "Ask Mamma." by Mr. S. Taylor. Dancing was kept going until daylight, a good time being -pent bv all. The supper, which was a sit-down one., was a capital one. Mr. Addenbrooke. at tile, close of the dancing, thanked Mis* Marie Francis for supplying the niu>ic for the dance, and also the ladies for their attendance and help. Mr. V. Robinson's farewell "social" will lake place next Thursday, the 4th of February.
