THE FIRST VOLUNTEER CORPS.
To the Editor. Sir,—f believe with "Old Londoner"' that the Honorable Artillery Co. of London can claim precedence as regards actual date of existence of any lmo.wn volunteer corps. History al*o tells- me that there were plenty of volunteers before 1854. l ; or instance, 340,000 weie prepared to assist the British regulars ami militia when Napoleon was threatening to Invade England. AH that does affect iuy assertion that the South Devon and Exeter Co. was tlie parent of the volunteer force organised iu 185!). —I am, etc., Wm. IIOSSiTEU.
