A cable message from the High Com niissioner in London, dated .laimarv 'I slates:— ' " ' Mutton—The market is quiet The stock uf New Zealand mutton is moderate, and there is little demand. The current (imitations are: Canterbury 3'/»d, North Island 3'/,d, River .Plate 3d Australian 2%d. The lamb market is weak. Stocks of Australian lamb on hand are heavy, and are widely distributed amongst agents, who are'pushing the sales. The supplies from River Plate are increasing. The quotations for this season's, other than Canterbury, arc 3%d; last season's Canterbury 3d', other than Canterbury 4%d. Reef—There is a better demand for beef, but there is no change in prices. Butter—The market is steady, with n fair business doing. There is u better demand for the choicest New Zealand brands, which are quoted at 112s. Australian is quoted at 108s, Danish 115s. Siberian 103s, and Argentine 108s per cwt.
Cheese—The market is firm, with a hardening tendency. White, makes are quoted at 00s; coloured, which is iu small supply, is quoted at 01s. •Hemp—The current quotations for hemp are: Good fair grade on spot £25. fair grade on spot £23 ss, fair and current Manila on spot £24, January lo March shipments good fair grade £2410s. fair grade !£22 10s, fair current Manila £23 ss.
Kauri Gum—The market is firm, with more inquiry for quotations of ordinary to fair. Three-quarters scraped is quoted at loos, fair half-scraped 100s, brown fair half to three-quarter scraped 90s, brown pickings (common to good) 555. bush fair to good pale and amber scraped 1455-. The stock held in London amounts to 558 tons.
Wool—The market remains firm. Prices are slightly advanced for all grades of merino. Hops —The market is dull and unsettled, with n downward tendency. Rest English hops are quoted at 70s. and American at 50s.
XEW PLYMOUTH WOOL, HIDE, SHKEPSkIX, AND TALUJW SALE. L. A. XOLAX'S 11EP0UT. We. held our opening sale of hides, etc., for the year in our store ou Wednesday, 20th .lanmiry. As we held no sale in December, ou account of the date fixed by the Woolbrokeiv Association falling too close to the holidays for convenience of buyers, we had a full and attractive catalogue, buyers remarking that they had seldom seen a better-conditioned lot of hides, etc. Coni(petition was exceedingly keen for all classes offered, with the exception of skins, which were slow of sale. Hides.—All cow hides sliowed a distinct' advance, particularly medium weights. 'Prices realised showed an advance, of at least '/-d per lb. We had very few ox; these sold at about the same advance, no really good oll'ering. Calf were not represented in such large ' numbers as at previous sale, but held at about recent high rates. Yearlings ad- 1 vanced fully '/id. 'Skins. —' We had a big catalogue. Prices generally were lower than we expected. All good lines made ruling rates.
Tallow.—Casks sold at last month' rates.
Wool.—Competition was keen, and all lots were cleared at what we consider good prices for class offered. We offered no really first-class stull'. Calfskins.—Firsts S'/iil, seconds 7»/»d. thirds T'/ B d, heavy B%d, cut li%d, slippy a'/sd. .Shecipskins.—'Woolly, dry, best 5s 2d to 5s lid. medium 4s 2d to 4s l)d; salted. 4s to 4s lOd; pelts, best salted 7d to 2s, inferior Is to Is sd, damaged lid to Hid; lambs, Is !)d to 2s 4d; settlerswoolly 3s to 4s (id, Imlf-woolled Is to 2s !)d; damaged pelts and skins, 3d to Is Gil.
