BOROUGH COUNCIL

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of tho Borough Council was held last ■night. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. (I. Tisch) and Crs. Boon, Bellringcr, Coleman, Collis, Mills, Morey, Cattlev and Browne. OLD SOLDIERS' CHAVES.

Mr. AY. K. Skinner, for the Commissioner of Crown Lamb, wrote regarding the removal of the bodies of old soldiers to two central positions, one in the Protestant and one in the Roman Catholic portion of the cemetery. He stated that in -September last an estimate was forwarded at the request of the Defente Department for elimination, re-collin-hig, and re-interring of the remains of tho.se old soldiers buried at Tc lleuni. In a letter covering the estimate it was suggested that it was hotter to let the. remains be undisturbed, and if anything were to he done"'in the direction of "c!earing-up" or "preservation" it 4 would bo better met by attention to the actual burying-plaees rather than by a —so to speak—pretended re-burial. And there the matter rested, as far as he was aware. The Mayor suggested that the letter should be referred to the Keserves Committee.

Cr. Collis thought that if application were made to tin* Department for a direct grant for thoroughly tidying up tlu» graves in the cemetery, it would probably be favorably received. If tins were done he thought the C."> a year promisAl by the Department .-should he siiHieient to properly maintain the graves. The matter was referred to the Reserves Committee. IFARSLAXD HILL. The letter from the Department of Land-. and Survey, vesting Maryland Hill in the Council as a public domain, and appointing the Council to be a domain hoard in control of it, was received. and the town clerk was instructed to reply accepting the charge. ft was pointed out that the vesting order e.v cluded a portion of the reserve fronting St. Mary's churchyard, which was to be dedicated as a monumental reserve for the Taranaki war memorial. The Mayor said' that while the Council had little funds for beautifying, it would he necessary to see that'the domain was propeulv maintained. KNCIXKKH'S JUvHIUT.

discussion took place concerning the engineer's recommendation to kerb Devon Street East from lirown street to the llenui stream.

Cr. Hills (|Uestioned the. advisability of extending tin- money just now, ami also stilted that there were many places wchcr kerbing was more necessary. Or. Collis considered it would be folly to kerb without channelling, fur the water would undermine the kerb.

His Worship: It's surprising how these east end councillors stick together. Personally, 1 have no east or wc-t, or any other spot. Cr. Bellringcr: Hear, hear. Nor have I.

His Worship: I don't know. You've got a pretty strong leaning one way. The report was adopted, and on tiemotion of Cis. HeHringer and lloon it was decided that channelling be added.

A supplementary report was submitted, as follow*: —lnspector Evetts reports that Mr. Wooldridge refuses to pay license fees on his three five-horse waggons, and says in effect that he is prepared to contest the authority to compel him to pay. The inspector also states that he considers it will be necessary to engage a solicitor. Street names: Upwards of fifty of these have been lying i" the borough sheds for some v'ear* past. I have therefore had them fixed in position at the same time as those which your Council authorised to he fixed, It was decided to enforce the by-Saws in respect to the carriers' license due by Mr. Wooldridge. RKAITH'YINfi EFFORTS.

Cr. lieilriugcr objected to the Reserves Committee's recommendation to expend CHI on the extension of the "Lovers' Walk'' at Hcnui.

Cr. Collis said the Reserve* Committee's account had still I'll in it. He pointed out, in answer lu questions, that the tlO would be sullieicu to extend the walk well up the river and construct a path from there back to the cemetery, past the monuments of the cemetery.
