Ttvelt'e months was all too short for a man to do justice to himself in this ollice. hut >lill Mr. Tis.-h had tilled tlk> position « itli marked ability, 1111(1 ho voiced the I'ccli.tg of the
Council in c.\[iivs* : n. ; » desire tliat lie would stand in. Tin- speaker sincerely hoped that alter mature consideration the Mayor would I M . aide to announce to the burges-es that lie was prepared to again assniii.- the mavoraltv. lie thought he wan safe in. saving that the election, in the event of Mr. Tiscli seeking ollice again, would lie uncontested. Of course,.a man had the right to say "yes" or "no" in a matter of this kind, but when he entered public life he had 011 occasion to place his own wishes secondary to the public interest, and the councillors specially requested him to adopt this course. Jle moved to the effect that the. councillors specially request the .Mayor to re-consider his decision and endeavor to see liis way to again accept ollice. His Worship replied very brielly that he had marie the statement attributed it) him, and as far as he knew he was goi;ig to adhere to it, but at the same time he was very grateful to the Conn-
ciJ for its expressions towards him. Cr. West seconded tin; motion, and said that from what he. could gather it seemed to l>e tin* unanimous wish of the burgesses that -Mr. Tiseli should serve? another term as Mayor, and there had been general surprise upon reading of his determination iiot to stand again. The majority desired Kim to re-consider his decision. Cr. Browne said that he would like to see the Mayor go on for another year, so as to carry out the various- works for which he had made provision in the esti- j mates. As far as lie could see the oilice was going to l>o no sinecure next year, for the Council would have to see to the opening of Leech street and the formation of the cattle road to Henui; a drainago system for the east end; the re-placing of the Powderham street bridge; and as the Mayor was already in touch with these things he thought it would be better for him to pilot tham through. The motion was carried by acclamation. The Mayor said that he would take a day or two to consider the matter.
