AUCKLAND INTiiKFJfcKEXUE. At the last meeting of the New Plymouth Auatioir Committee the following letter from the secretary of the ■Auckland Slaughtermen's Union (Jir. J'. H. Dust) was read:— Tlu July lutl y,ou promised my Union a definite reply to my communication regarding your Council's acceptance of the conditions of our industrtil agreement. We have patiently awaited your advice, and were surprised to read your reply to our branch secretary ;(Jlr. E. J. Frost) on the loth ultimo stating that you would defer consideration still further. At a special meeting of the above Union held on the 6th inst. I was instructed to advise of the near approach of the next sitting of the Arbitration Court in Auckland, and that if nothing definite was heard from you by the 16th inst. 1 was instructed to cite your Council for attachment at the above sitting of the Court. I hope that your Council will nee its way clear to obviate this inconvenience."

After due consideration the committer resolved: "That in view of the fact that the manager reports that the Council is paying more than the usual rate of wages, the Council be recommended to call for tenders for killing at the abattoir. Conditions to be drawn up and approved by the committee, and that in the meantime a copy of the resolution be forwarded to the Auckland Slaughtermen's Union." The report of the abattoir manager as submitted to the committee showed that daring the past, six months the men had actually received £248 10s, whilst for the same period under the' award the same men would have received £2OO fls 6d. Under the award, however, it would have been necessary to employ an additional man as a slaughterman, who is not allowed to do anything except the actual killing and dressing, so that the Council would have had to pay an additional sum of
