11l view of the writer's remarks on the "probables" of the Aiistrnliim eleven in Inst Saturday's issue, the following is not without interest:—" It would appear, if ])uhlio opinion is n guide, Hint A. Colter is not. by any moans sure of sided ion as tln> fast liowler of the learn" says " Xot Out'' hi tho Sydney Beforoe. " The success of L.' P. Vernon, the Victorian, has brought him at a liound, so to speak, into the running for tin. position. L. 1!. Hill is also nicntinni'il, lint Vernon is now regarded as tlie strong rival to the Sydney fast howler, lie is not so fast as hotter, hut. like Fielder, the Ivnglish fast howler, he delivers high over (whereas Tottor delivers rnuinl) and Keeps a verv Hindi hotter length than Ihe (iloh'c trundler. I understand Unit Vernon has just, successfully got fhrongb some special examinations in his line of business, mid that lie is available if chosen. However, as Cotter possesses what is known as an extra hit of pace, his ■prospects of selection must be considered a trifle brighter than Vernon's, though it may 1 depend on form in the remaining Sheffield Shield games. In addition to bis powers as bowler, Vernon has qualifications as batsman. ha his only appearance against the English team last season lie made 25 and (12: against South Australia lip has made 57. f>B, and 25; but against New South Wales ho has not yet got a start, having played five innings, each less than double figures."
