A\ hole districts were allocked from Cheviot down to Amberley, the caterpillars attacking grain stalks just below (he cartli. This caused the jgiain to fall over and to prevent its ripening. Farmers in many instances are getting in their crops prematurely J in order to save it from destruction, (jrass has been attacked with the grain. Caterpillars are moving in a dense mass from one paddock to another. Small I birds hitherto supposed to feed on these insects appear to be letting them severely alone. Starlings, however, seem to .he busying themselves eating the caterpillars. Tlie position is very serious, the loss to farmers being enormous. such virulent plague has been experienced iu the district within the memory of (he oldest farmer.
