Mr. Charles Crutch, of Hawera, who was presented with nil illuminated address by the railway servants upon his retirement from the position of inspector of Permanent Ways, joined the ser-, vice of the Great Western Railway 1111 Erisland as long ago as 18(58. He came to New Zealand in 1873, and after woikin« for different contractors lie joined the service of the New Zealand railways in 1877, and had been witli tliem ever since. In 1881 lie was appointed Inspector of Permanent Ways, and he had been in that capacity at Lumsden 'ABhburton, Invercargill, Aramoho, and lastly at Hawera for five years and a lalf. .. The secretary of the Hawera committee which is arranging the Opposition banquet next month has received the ■following telegram from Mr. W. 1'- Maseey, Leader of the Opposition:-"" 1" be present with you 011 2nd prox. unless something verv important intervenes.
