' The death of Nocluiform completes 'the chain of misfortune which has attended the New Zealand-bred horse ever sihicei lie was bought for uOOOgns 'liy Mr. J. F. Buchanan (writes the. New Zealand Times). Nocluiform, who was bred by •the late Mr. G. G. Stead, was by Mulli-, •form, by Hotchkiss (a son of Mulskel)— , 'Formo, from La Notte by Eri.lisponl— ■, La Tosca, by Robinson Crusoe—Night-, mare, by Panic—Evening Star (imp.), by Lord Clifdcn.
• Noctuiform commenced his racing, career as a. two-year-old at the I!)(H summer meeting of tile Auckland Ruciii", Willi, when he. won the Tenth Roval, Stakes, six furlongs, defeating Multilid, Boris, and his stable companion, Sungod. He only started on one other occasion that season, when lie was made a very warm favorite for Iho Middle, ■Park Plate, six furlongs. His only opponents were Stronghold and Margue rite. lioth of whom, in ihal order, finished ill front of the Multiform toll.
• It was, however, ill the following season, as a three-year-old; Hint Noctui'form achieved brilliant deeds on the turf, not onlv of New Zealand, but of Australia. His first notable achievement was in the. A..1.C. Derby, run at Randwick, in which Noctuiform not only won, but created a new record of 2miii fti'/oscc for the l race, and also a new. Australasian record for the distance (one mile and aJialf), which was, equalled two days later by another NewZealand bred and owned horse in Mania, poto, when he won the Metropolitan. Handicap at the same meeting, Two. months later Xoetuifnrm gave further ■proof of his being nn exceptionally good •colt by annexing the triple crown of, the New Zealand Cup, C..T.C. Derby, and, Canterbury Cup, thus emulating his sire. ■Multiform'n.s regards the two latter. • As mentioned. Noctuiform was purchased by Mr. >T. F. Buchanan, of whisky, manufacture fame, and shipped to England. There, however, he proved a rank failure, and of late in. even the most, •insignificant events the same indifferent form was displayed by this once brilliant performer under the Soiitlie>rn Cross. Quite recently Mr. Buchanan, who, it was not to be wondered, at, tired of such a surprisingly big disappointment, sold Noctuiform fov 50flgns, or a tenth part of what he paid for him towards the close 'of 1005.
