UNIONISTS V. NON-UNIONISTS
AN INCIPIENT STRIKE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dnnedin, Last Night. Some sixty members of the Waterside Workers Union, engaged to work the cargo on the steamer Victoria when she arrived early this morning, refused to 'work unless sonic non-members of the t'nion, seven or eight in number, who had also been engaged, were put off. The men were engaged in the ordinary way on Saturday, and the fact thai some were non-unionists was not known until this morning. The men having stated their intention not to work, except upon the dismissal of the nonunionists, it was thought advisable (the delay in the departure of the steamer, being serious) to give way to them. Three or four non-unionists expressed their willingness to join the Union and were allowed to work. The rest were dismissed. It was arranged between tbo two parlies that members of the I'niou should be provided with badges to enable employers to distinguish thein from non-unionists, but badges will not be' available for a week or two yet.
