It was decided to wire the Wanganui Caledonian Society that unles it became affiliated at once all competitors competing on December 22 would be disqualified. ' All who competed at the Southland Caledonian sports yesterday and to-day were disqualified during the pleasure of the Union.

The report showed that 175 "bodies held sports during the year, and 101)0 competitors registered. The balance-sheet showed a Credit balance of £SB ss.

At the Conference, with reference to the attitude of "lily-white" amateurs, the chairman said that in the event of the Union receiving mudt more criticism of the kind indulged in lately, he would seriously consider the abolition of all amateur events from their programmes. Such a course would not cause trouble with the Sports Federation.

Southland proposed the abolition of the permit fee for cycling events as well as amateur athletics. The chairman moved an amendment that no society contribute permit or alliliation fees to anybody except the Athletic Union. The Southland Caledonian gathering of 11)08 and 190!) was disqualified during the association's pleasure. The disqualiliaction was removed from Thomas Johnston, of Bluff. OTAGO CALEDONIAN SPORTS.

Dunedin, Friday. The Otago Caledonian Society's sports opened to-day. Tho weather was fine in the morning, but it got cold aud threatening in the afternoon. Fortunately the rain held off until the sports were over. The New Zealand Athletic Union championships this year are allotted to Dunedin and are being decided at this meeting. (From Our Own Correspondent). Tin: eighth annual sports meeting in copneetion with the liahotu Athletic Club took place on New Year's Day. Through the courtesy of Sir. A. Chapman the sports were held in his paddock, the Recreation Cround being unavailable owing to the fact that it "'» being ploughed and levelled. There was a very large attendance, and the sports passed off very well indeed, all the ollicials working hard. The gathering was successful in every way. Mr. A. K. Phillips, as chairman, controlled the sports in a very aide manner, whilst Mr. Ij. Fischer, the capable secretary, attended so well, to even the minutest detail that there was absolutely no hitch. A circus was present during the day and did good business, as also did the refreshment booth, which was run by Messrs. Kothcry, Rookes and H. Phillips. The "Jerusalem aeddy" was present, but was not in good bucking order. The fields were very good and the finishes close, which reflects great credit on the handicapper, Mr. F. Bonnie. During the day some fine music was provided by the Opunake Brass Band under Conductor Bishop. Results:—

In the evening the usual concert was held, and, despite the rain which set ill after the sports, there was a good attendance, £l7 5s Od being taken at the door. Mr. A. E Phillips presided A good programme was rendered as follows:—Pianoforte solo, "Staccati," Miss indall; song, "A Tar of the King," MiKelly; song, "Golden Autumn Tide," Miss Julian, who, in response to an encore, repeated the last verse; comic song, "If a Woman says she Won't." Mr. Acklom; song, "Will of the Wisp," Mr. F. Tindall; dance, Irish Jig, Miss Rookes (encored); comic song, "Women get the best of it," Mr. Patterson, and as an encore, "Bachelors"; song, "Our i Jack,' Mr. Kelly; song, "Flow Gently Sweet Afton," Miss Julian; song, "Coleen Bawn," Mr. Tindall, who repeated one verse iii response to an encore; comic song, "Im the man they left behind," Mr. Patterson, and, as an encore, "Daisy." Members of the MeMuhon Ciheus Co. also gave three distinct items, each of which was encored. The chairman, in thanking all the performers for their kindness, stated that he had reason to believe that the sports would be a. financial success. After the hall ha'd been cleared, dancing was indulged in. Mr. Knowles provided the music, Messrs J. Rothery and A. D. Fielder acting as M.'sC.
