, STAKTS TO-NIGHT. * The. Seaside Carnival opens to-night I with a grand swimming gala under the ' direction of the New Plymouth Swimt. "ung Club. The races will be conducted , at the municipal saltwater baths, under electric light, and good sport should be ' witnessed.

Three new arc lamps are being elected to-day, which makes six powerlul electric arcs around the sports ground, in addition to the incandescent lights on the bandstand, which will be occupied to-morrow night by tile New Plymouth Orchestra under ifr. William Perry. '1 here is every possibility of a se.tienliglit from ihc nian-o'-war being erected at the apex of the southern terrace, commanding a line panoramic view of t fie enjoyment below. Ollicers of 11.M.5, Cambrian, which is to arrive iu port to-morrow, will be present, The <«arrison Jiand will parade from Egmontstrcet to the ground at 7.30 p.m., and the programme will commence at 8 o'clock with an orchestral selection. Then will follow the iirst heats of the half-mile bicycle handicap, for wiliieh there are large entries. J'eddie Bros, give their line gymnastic display, followed by the half-mile bicycle 'finals. The lilondoaian iiros. will 'give their marvellous exhibition oil the tight-rope, and the rest of the evening' will be taken up by a variety programme. This includes a mile bicycle race. There will be a couple of selected items from Mr. \Y. Lints' gymnastic classes, inclusive of lire-club swinging, the clubs being illuminated by electricity. The James . Bros., the well-known midget pugilists, will endeavor to showihow Johnson beat liurns providing the police permit can ; be obtained, interspersed among the ■ items will be orchestral selections. Re- 1 freshments, ice creams, and so forth arc obtainable on the ground. A shilling admission will be charged, and pro- j eeeds devoted to the Seaside Improve- s ment Committee to assist in the work of popularising New Plymouth as a holiday place.

FRIDAY. Thursday is, comparatively speaking, an "off day," but the officials will be hard at work preparing for the monster seaside picnic at Moturoa on New Year's Day. All the arrangements are on a large scale. Hot water, tea, milk, and sugar are provided for everybody free, and all other forms of refreshment and sustenance can be procured at the various booths on tli« beach and thereabouts. Dressing-tents for both sexes are provided, and the American craze for mixed bathing promises to be largely emulated. Sports for the kiddies and fun for tiie adults will be provided in a hundred different forms. The warship will be thrown open to visitors, anil steamers will p'y to and fro. The Amokura will possibly be berthed and thrown open for inspection a treat that should be educative and instructive, as well as novel. SATURDAY.

Tlw garden party at the Recreation Sports Ground to entertain the naval visitors will be held. Particulars of this function will appear later.
