N.Z. AXEMEN'S ASSOCIATION
SECOND DAY. At Eltham on Monday there was another large crowd to witness the second day's sport in the New Zealand Axemen's Association's eight annual carnival. There were large fields, and some • excellent sport was provided, but the sympathy of the public went out to the scratch men and back-markers generally oa account of the impossible tasks set them by the handicappev. Host of the reputed '"big guns" failed to chop their way into tile final of the Axemen's Cup, the big event of the day, which was fought out in a series of eight matches. Hiley, the Australian champion, was no more successful than on the first day, but it was seen that Saturday's experience had led him to alter his style somewhat, and he indulged in a slower stroke to suit the peculiarities of the Kahikatea logs, with which be was unfamiliar. He gave some inkling of his powers in the Visitors' Handicap, wihen he struck some fairly "free" timber. Puklowski's win in the big event was very popular. He had not, he said, given himself a chance in this match, and was content to enter for only the £SO prize. Payment of £1 additional would have entitled him to another £SO. This made his double win for the meeting, he having won the Underhand Chop on the first day. Dumphy, a powerfullooking specimen of vigorous manhood from the Taumarunui district, narrowly missed annexing the cup. His axehandle cracked in the first few blows.
The blocks used were no improvement on. Saturday's. The executive is considering the matter of using puketca blocks next year, this timber being less knotty and freer in the grain. It is also probable that next year's earnivil will be iheld in the large sports enclosure. From the point of view of the public the arrangements required modernising. The official programmes gave the names of the intending competitors, but there was no announcement of the seratchings. Competitors' and block numbers might with advantage be made a little more discernible. A good starters' board and large result-board would be greatly appreciated by everyone concerned. The excelleat work of the officials was to some extent marred by these rather primitive appointments, but we understand that a forward policy has been determined upon for the next carnival. During the day J. Maitson and G. Vincent had a private sawhig match, the former winning easily. The cycling events were well contested. The Eltham Brass Band played some capital music throughout the afternoon. The axe used by Puklowski in the Cup conteat was presented to the committee, hand-painted, and raffled, Mr. D. McLeod, of Eltham, holding the lucky ticket.
Following are the results:— NEW ZEALAND AXEMEN'S CUP, of £l4O. —First prize, Axemen's Cup and £9O and special of £SO, second £ls, third £lO, fourth £5, fifth £3, sixth £•2, and £1 each to all other competitors finishing in the final. Fifth Heat: E. liorne, 45sec, 1; W. Dowman, 3osec,2; J. O'Connor, 45sec, 3. Home won easily. An objection was raised to O'Connor's second unduly assisting him by pushing his bloek just before it fell. A protest was entered, but dismissed, it being considered the action of the second did not affect the result. The "second," however, was disqualified. Time, 2win 4(i l-ssec. SEMI-FINALS.
