MISSING TOUIUSTS. liy Telegraph.- -Press Aasoclatioij. Wellington, December 22. A telegram was received by the Tourist Department last evening stating that a Dr. Scott and his daughter, who left Tewhaiti last Tuesday for Lake House, Waikaremoana, a distance of 4tt miles, had not yet been heard of. A search party was sent out last night, but up to 1 o'clock this morning no trace of the missing persons was found. Possibly they may be with the Maoris in some little village of the Urewera Country. Wellington, Last Night. A telegram was received in Wellington to-night stating that the missing touriste, Dr. Scott and his daughter, had been visiting the camp of Itua, the "prophet," and left there this morning for Waikaremoana. Auckland, Last Night. A message received to-night stated that Dr. Scott and his daughter, who have been missing for some days, had arrived at Waikaremoana. They are much fatigued after their week's wandering in the bush. WESTPOItT HIGH SCHOOL. , Westport, Last Night. At a meeting of the Westport District High School to-night four applications out of seven received for the principalship of the school were considered, and it was .finally resolved to send on to the Board the names of Mr. Hugh Wake, B.A. (Hokitika) and Mr. Joseph Hunter, M.A. (Stratford), to the Nelson Education Board, with a --recommendation that Mr. Wake be appointed. ACCOUNTANTS' EXAMINATION. Auckland, Last Night. The results of the examination held by the New Zealand Accountants' and Auditors' Association at various centres in the Dominion in November last were made available to-day, thos'e for the different centres being: —Associates, grade A: G. CHRISTCHURCH TRAMWAYS. Ohristctuirch, Last Nlgnt. r During the four weeks from November 9th to December 6th, 909,919 passengers were carried on the Christchurch tramways. A GRUESOME DISCOVERY. ' Ohristclmrch, Last Night. A-resident of Britten street, Norta Linwood, made a gruesome find when digging in his domestic cabbage patch this morning. His spade struck against something hard, and on removing the soil concealing it a human skull grinned cadaverously at him. After lie had recovered from the shock be pursued his exploration and lineartlicd lire relics of what had been a human being. Probably the remains are those of a native, as there was a Maori settlement in that locality some years ago, and this is not the first skeleton which has been found in the vicinity. The bones were taken possession of by a constable and submitted to the coroner for instructions as to their final disposition.
WINDFALL FOR WANGANUI HOSPITAL. Wauganui, Last Night. The last English mail brought, to the Wauganui Hospital Board a useful Christmas box. The late P, K. Easson ( of Perth, Scotland, has bequeathed about £IO,OOO, to be distributed in 1 equal shares between the Wanganui Hospital, Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, and the Hillside Home at Perth. THE WANGANUI WRECKS. Wellington, Last Niglit. Captain S. G. Stringer, Assistant ■Government Shipping Superintendent at Wellington, and Captain C. MoArtliuv of the firm of McArtlmr and Hall, have | been appointed nautical assessors for the magisterial inquiries to be held at Wanganui to-morrow concerning the mishap to the steamer Charles Edward and the stranding of the Ururoa.
MILITARY ENQUIRY
Oamaru, Last Night. The statement that the Military Court exonerated the officers is doubted on the ground of tire declaration of secrecy made by members of the Court. It is rumored that a certain document relative to the enquiry mysteriously disappeared. It is also alleged that the alleged offences were quite serious enough to warrant investigation. There is considerable feeling in volunteer circles, and it is staled that one company and three j officers will resign unless 'the matUr is treated with due significance.
