DROWNING FATALITY.

YOUNG MAN LOST IN THE WAITARA. A young mail named Lewis Rhodes, a carter, lost his life in the Waitara river between two and three o'clock yesterday afternoon. It appears irorn the meagre particulars available that he was exercising a horse in the river just above the bridge, and when only nine or twelve feet from the<*hore the animal turned over, nothing more being seen of the rider, who, it is presumed, was struck in the water by the horse. There was between !)ft! and 12ft of water in the river at the time, the current being fairly strong. A companion made au ineffective effort to help him, and in so.doing got into difficulties himself. Several attempts were made to recover the body but without avail. It is thought the body must have been carried out to sea by the under current.
