SWIMMING.
There was a large attendance of members of the Xew Plymouth Swimming Club pre.-cnt at the weekly practice at the baths last night, and a good entry for the principal event, a 30-yards handicap race. la the first limit Brown beat Hawkins ''by a touch, but in the second heal Bristol had a somewhat easy win from Dixon. Tile linal proved very interesting, and then again Brown snatched lirst place from Hawkins by a few inches. Bristol (ser) made a good race, but finished third. ■ The decision of the. Central School authorities to hold a picnic after the holidays instead of giving prizes is endorsed by the pupils. Mr. Demp>ey. tiki: headmaster, has ascertained from the pupils that they would rather have a picnic ill which nil fan join than prizes for only a portion of the scholars. He recommends, how ver, that attendance prizes be and this course wdi probably be adopted.
