Keir llavdie, M.ii'., speaking ill Barry, expressed the, fear that the Uoveminent were about to commence a campaign of words against the Lords. If t'oni hundred Commoners, lie said, wanted lo overthrow the House of l.ords it eon Id be done, but the Liberals every year created peers, and also those desirous of being created must be taken into account. Mr. Asquith, he ji.roceeded, knew perfectly well that Liberal opinion inside and outside of the House of Commons was divided on the subject. .Mr. Asipiith dared not s,poak out. The Commons should refuse the votes for the Army, the'Jfavv, and Civil Service until the King consented to the. abolition of the 'House of Peers. If they taxed the land at the present-day value they could obtain forty millions a year iu the way of taxation.
