THE HEMP INDUSTRY.
SI'LITTINO til' THE OtvADK.S. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington. Last Night. The Department of Agriculture has submitted to the Hemp Committee oJ the Wellington Chamber of Commerce a suggesied alteration «»f the o!lic.ial hemp grade in the direction of splitting up the grade-, the idea being that there should be two designations for each grade; for instance, that there should be "high-pointing fair" and •low-point-ing fair," etc. The. ; propos:il was considered by the committee to-day, but met with no approval, members considering that while it might have a certain advantage for the local miller, it would hamper buye.s, also that when desired the grades were divided, the hemp beting sold as a lowpointing oue or high-ipointing quality, and this could still be done. It wan not advisable, .however, that the trade should be tied down to deal on this basis. The following resolution was carried: *Tt would be impossible to carry out forward sales on a. five,-point margin, and the proposed alteration >n the trading regulations is therefore not advisable."
The committee also passed the following resolution: "This committee urges the Department to bring into operation the grading regulations with regard to tow immediately, as oversea buyers are expecting the regulations to be enforced from the Ist of January next,"
