THE RAINS. Cliristchurch, Last Night. A refreshing and much-needed ram set in somewhat unexpectedly from the north-east early to-night and continued steadily throughout the evening. The parched land greedily sucked up the welcome moisture and'the benefit of the down pour will be apparent in the course of a few days, when the sunbrowned lawns and dusty gardens will commence to make headway again after the long and trying drought.
COUNTY COUNCIL ELECTION UPSET. Dargaville, Last Night. An electoral petition was heard before Mr. Dyer. S.Magainst the election of Councillor Field for Maungani riding ot the llobson county, 011 the gruund that the roll was improperly made, that persons were disfranchised* and that a ■deputy left the booth unguarded several times. -Mr. li. ,1. Coates represented Edwin Harding and nine other petitioners. Mr. E. T. Field opposed personally. and Mr. Hayes, county solicitor, watched proceedings. The evidence showed that the county clerk omitted to file the 1007-08 roll, and added 10, mimes and deleted two. The roll used' was not passed by a magistrate. The Magistrate upset the election, granting costs Cl» Its against Mr. Field and the returning oiliccr. NEW PARLIAMENTARY BUILDINGS. Wellington, Lust Night.
