VOLCANIC ACTIVITY.
FURTHER EARTHQUAKE By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Thursday. Further severe earthquakes were experienced at Whakataue last night. Further evidence goes to confirm the supposition of an eruption on Whale Island. Professor Thomas, interviewed, said the indications pointed two ways, showing either that water had obtained ae-! cess to the hot volcanic rocks below the surface and the volcanic steam had accumulated until it had produced a fissure, or else this might be a stage ot volcanic activity along the recognised line of volcanic action, in which case there might occur an explosion such as that at Taravvera. THE PHENOMENA AT WHALE ISLAND.
Auckland, Last Night. Mr. J. A. Pond, Government Analyst, who about thirty years ago was part owner of Whale Island and resided there for a few weeks, informed a Herald reporter that the phenomena onservable on the island are probably due to clouds of dust caused by a huge landslip on the eastern side of the island. When he resided on the island about thirty years ago there were, lie says, evidences that such slips had occurred. Prior to I that time these slips, he stated, might be due to the earthquakes at W'hakatane.
