As a result of persistent rumours that a brewery or beer depot was to b<> established 011 the border of Ashburton, the no-license district boundary 0! which is now only a mile outside the town, a member of the Xo-License Council telegraphed to the Minister of Customs to-day asking for a denial of the rumour, as such action would be "1garded as an outrage 011 public sentiment. Replying, Mr. Millar stated that 110 permit for a depot had been grante 1, but the law did not require a permit for the erection of a brewery. Notification had been received, as required liy law, tluit a brewery was alxnit to be erected, but the mailer had not vei been dealt with. The Cloverninent would, so far as it had power, endeavour to prevent tile placing of any brewery or depot immediately on the boundaries of a no-license district.
